Stanford Tour 2018 Day 10 Group 6

Stanford Tour 2018 Day 10 Group 6

19th July, 2018

We had a class of cryptography and decision science. In the evening, we played ‘capture the flag’ and experienced an engaging entrepreneurship panel. All were really good, influential and inspiring.

In the cryptography class, we got to learn about the history, flaws, and future of the ciphertext. The lessons started with an exercise of decoding and translating the ciphertext. Although it's very challenging and we felt a little defeated, it's very fun and we showed good teamspirit and cooperation. We had another exercise where we got to encrypt messages into codes with a code dictionary we made by ourselves.

In the afternoon, we had the science decision class where we were given a scenario. In the scenario, we were trapped in the Himalayas and had to make a difficult decision so as to reach our final destination. We also learnt the steps and core principles of making a wise decision. All of the activities helped us think from different perspectives to make the best decisions. This was an enriching and useful class as we had to make all kinds of decisions, no matter big or small, so we can apply our knowledge learnt in the classes to our daily lives.

In the evening, we had an entrepreneur panel with four experienced entrepreneurs. They gave us valuable, real life examples of how they set up their business and what it takes to be a successful businessman. This talk inspires us to work hard to achieve our goals and not to be afraid to stand out. We also understood that the best idea is not always the first idea, it takes several tries to discover your potential and create something even better. We always have the misconception that a product has to be creative and brand new, something that no one has thought of before. However, what frustrates you might be what people actually need, and that can become a successful product.

’One plus one equals rainbow.’ That's why we need to have a clear path in our studies in order to discover what we really want in life.
